How to Turn a Video Clip Into a GIF (Free, No Watermark)

Why GIF still beats a video clip in specific places
Video hasn't made GIF obsolete, it's just narrowed what GIF is actually for. A GIF autoplays without asking permission and without sound, which is exactly the behavior a lot of platforms either require or reward: chat apps and forums that render GIFs inline the moment they load, documentation and README files where a short looping demo says more than a paragraph of text, and quick product demos where you want someone to see the motion immediately, without hitting play and turning their volume down first. A video clip could technically do the same job in most of those places, but it usually needs an extra click, and on some platforms it won't autoplay at all.
The trade-off: quality and length versus file size
GIF is not an efficient format. It doesn't compress anywhere near as well as a modern video codec, which means the two things that make a GIF bigger - larger dimensions and a higher frame rate - add up fast. A short, small, low-frame-rate clip stays a reasonable size. Stretch the same settings across a longer clip or bump the dimensions up and the file balloons quickly, sometimes into tens of megabytes for something that would be a fraction of that size as a compressed MP4.
