MP3 vs WAV: Which Audio Format Should You Use?

MP3 and WAV solve different problems. One is small and convenient, the other is uncompressed and exact. Picking the right one depends on what you're doing with the file, not on which one sounds "better" in the abstract.
The core difference
WAV stores audio uncompressed, sample for sample, exactly as it was recorded. Nothing is thrown away, which means the file is large - a few minutes of stereo audio can run into tens of megabytes. MP3 compresses the audio by discarding parts of the sound that are harder for the ear to notice, shrinking the file to a fraction of the size. For most listening situations, a good MP3 sounds close enough to the original that the difference isn't noticeable on regular speakers or headphones.
When MP3 is the right call
MP3 is the practical choice for almost everyday listening and sharing: • Music you're keeping on a phone, tablet, or MP3 player where storage matters • Podcasts and audiobooks, where file size affects how fast something downloads or streams • Sending audio over email, chat, or messaging apps, where large attachments get rejected or take too long • Voice memos and recordings you just need to be small and portable

When WAV makes more sense
WAV earns its extra size in a handful of situations where quality and precision matter more than convenience: • Recording or editing audio in software, where re-saving a compressed file repeatedly degrades it further each time • Archiving an original recording you might want to edit or re-export later • Mixing or mastering music, where every bit of detail helps the final result • Working with audio for video production, where sync accuracy and consistent quality matter
If you're not editing or producing audio professionally, WAV's advantages mostly go unused, and you're left carrying a much bigger file for no real everyday benefit.
How much space are we actually talking about
The difference in size is bigger than most people expect. A few minutes of uncompressed stereo audio in WAV can easily run into tens of megabytes, while the same track saved as an MP3 at a standard bitrate is roughly a tenth of that. Multiply that across a music library, a folder of podcast episodes, or years of voice memos, and the format you choose has a real effect on how much storage you're using and how long a file takes to upload or send. That's exactly why MP3 became the standard for music players and streaming in the first place - it made large libraries practical on limited storage.
